BRENHAM ISD RECEIVES INSURANCE PAYMENT FOR FLOOD DAMAGE

Brenham ISD has received an initial payment from its insurer for the flood damage incurred in May.  The district received a check for $81,627 for damages to several campuses during the historic flooding in May.  BISD Director of Business and Finance Kim Weatherby requested a budget amendment for the payment at today’s (Tuesday’s) Noon School Board meeting.  She explained what the payment covers:

The district is expecting FEMA to cover 75 percent of the $50,000 deductible payment for the flood damage.

Weatherby also told the board that the insurance rate will be going up.  The districts property, liability, and automobile coverage policy renews in November, and that coverage will see a 20 percent increase.  The board approved the $171,534 policy which is an increase of $28,809 over last year’s rate.  Weatherby explained that districts statewide saw a 5 percent increase this year, but BISD had several large claims last year, not only from the flooding, but from several other incidents.

Also at today’s (Tuesday’s) meeting, the board approved the purchase of $38,438 in paper for the district from the low bidder, Sam’s Club.  That amount of paper represents two 18-wheeler truckloads.  The bid had to be approved by the board because it was just over the limit for items that could be purchased without board approval.

The school board also approved 2 donations to the district.  The Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union and an anonymous donor each gave $1500 to offset the cost of t-shirts for this year’s BISD opening convocation.

The board went into executive session after the open meeting to discuss personnel, but took no action after the session.
