BRENHAM ISD REVIEWS DISTRICT STAAR/ EOC ASSESSMENTS

The Texas Education Agency has released scores for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and End of Course (EOC) exams.

There were reported gains made in several areas such as 4th grade writing, 5th and 8th grade science and 7th grade math.

In addition, 100% of Algebra I students at the Brenham Junior High performed at the “Meets” level and 88% performed at the “Masters” level.

The district reported opportunities for growth in the areas of reading and writing.

Several changes were made by the TEA this year regarding the delivery of scores, including a newly designed STAAR report card for parents.

In addition, the TEA overhauled the online portal to allow parents to see how their children answered on the most recent administration of state standardized tests.

New terminology will also be used this year to rate student performance. The four new levels of proficiency are:

  • MASTERS GRADE LEVEL - Mastery of the course knowledge and skills is shown - student is on-track for college and career readiness.
  • MEETS GRADE LEVEL - Strong knowledge of course content - student is prepared to progress to the next grade.
  • APPROACHES GRADE LEVEL - Some knowledge of course content, but may be missing critical elements - student needs additional support in the coming year.
  • DID NOT MEET GRADE LEVEL - No basic understanding of course expectations is shown - student may need significant support in the coming year.

Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson said, "We are proud that our scores continue to improve across the board and the district will continue to focus on areas of improvement. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every child reaches his or her maximum academic potential."
