BRENHAM ISD SCHOOL BOARD TO DISCUSS DISTRICT OF INNOVATION

Brenham Independent School District will discuss a District of Innovation (DOI) during a school board meeting on Monday.BISD logo feature

Dr. Jamey Johnson will speak to the board about Brenham ISD exploring the concept of District of Innovation. The concept was passed by the 84th Legislative Session in Houston Bill 1842 and gives districts more local control, more autonomy, and more flexibility. Dr. Johnson will be sharing thoughts about forming a DOI committee. The committee would be responsible for researching whether or not a DOI is something Brenham ISD would like to pursue.

In other business, the school board will hold an executive session to consider the employment of a Director of Child Nutrition.

The Brenham Independent School District Board of Trustees will meet at 6 p.m. in lecture rooms 111 and 113 of Brenham High School.

  1. One parent asked the question in another school district meeting, concerning DOI: “If there are regulations or legislation that really ties the hands of schools, why wouldn’t a legislature simply repeal that legislation so that all schools are free from the tyranny of the State? Why hand over the decision making power to an executive or to a (possibly unelected, unaccountable) board to decide?”
I would strongly suggest everyone look at this legislation carefully because it may allow the state to consolidate smaller districts into “super districts/regions,” in an effort to remove administrative overhead and some infrastructure costs, but is will also remove local control to a more remote governing body. That being said, this may not be in the better interest for BISD.
