BRENHAM P.D. TO PARTICIPATE IN “STEP WAVE” PROGRAM OVER LABOR DAY

The Brenham Police Department will join with other agencies across the state in cracking down on drunk drivers over the Labor Day holiday.

The Brenham Police Department will be participating in a STEP Wave program sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation with hopes of preventing an increase in holiday DWI statistics.

Labor Day usually sees an increase in alcohol-related fatality crashes. According to Mothers’ Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), each year, on average, someone is killed in a drunk driving crash every 51 minutes. Over the Labor Day weekend, that statistic jumps to one every 34 minutes.

“The Brenham Police Department will be participating in a STEP Wave program sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). TxDOT provides grant funding to law enforcement agencies so officers can work overtime during specific periods of time – waves – to prevent and reduce fatal and serious injury car crashes involving impaired drivers,” said Chief Dant Lange. “We want everyone to enjoy this end of summer holiday safely.”

The focus on the holidays is a direct response to the increase of alcohol related accidents during those times. There are four specified wave periods in the grant. This is the last one, and is enforced from Aug.21st through Sept. 7th.

“We’ve participated in all four of the wave periods for this grant and believe our efforts have been effective. Brenham PD is committed to preserving a safe environment for our community, and deterring DWI offenses is part of that mission.” Lange said.
