BRENHAM PARKS BOARD HOLDS MEETING AT JACKSON STREET PARK

The Brenham Parks and Recreation Advisory Board had absolutely perfect weather Wednesday evening for their outdoor meeting.  The Parks Board held their meeting at Jackson Street Park so that park patrons could view how the board operates and provide input.  The Board is in the process of reviewing the Master Plan for Brenham Parks and Open Spaces that was completed in 2015.  Community Service Specialist Crystal Locke said that items that are planned for the next 5 to 7 years include widened walking and biking trails, nature trails, upgrades to the volleyball area at Hohlt Park, and improved bathroom facilities at Jackson Street Park.  The time table for the new Brenham Family Park on the south side of town will be up to City Council, but it could be at least 1 ½ to 2 years before construction begins.

The Board also looked at allowing Blinn College to utilize the Rankin Soccer Field at Hohlt Park for their new soccer program.  Public Works Director Dane Rau said that Blinn would like to use Rankin Field and another soccer practice field at the park for the fall soccer season. Rau said the maintenance for the two fields comes to about $30,000 per year, but Blinn would not utilize the fields year round.  He also noted that the scoreboard at Rankin Field is in need of replacing.  Rau said he will be working out the terms of the agreement with Blinn and will present them to the board at an upcoming meeting.
