Want to know how real police work is done? Come join the Brenham Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy. Classes start Feb.9, 2017 and there are a few slots left.

“The CPA is one of the programs the Police Department utilizes to build a partnership between the department and the community,” said Cpl. Chris Jackson, community services officer. This program has been a great way to educate interested people about the inner workings of the department.

“Several years ago, we set out to bridge the gap between the citizens of Brenham and the local law enforcement.  From that, the Citizens Police Academy was born. It is an educational program which allows our community to see inside the world of law enforcement and what is involved with the officers’ daily duties,” Jackson said.

“We use tours, lectures, demonstrations and "hands-on" experiences so the class participants can gain insight into the policies and procedures of the department.  Citizens in the program can ride with police officers during normal patrol a shift, which gives people a firsthand look at what officers deal with on a daily basis.  It also allows our citizens to meet and intermingle with the officers and lets them get to know each other as friends and neighbors.  The resulting partnership between citizens and officers furthers our efforts to improve the quality of life for everyone in the community,” he added.

Officers from the department provide the instruction, with topics covering Patrol Procedures, Criminal Investigations, S.W.A.T. & Hostage Negotiation, Building Searches, Traffic Stops, Narcotics & Gang Enforcement, and D.W.I. Enforcement.

The twelve-week long classes are held at the Brenham Police Department and are open, free of charge, to anyone who lives in Washington County and is at least 17 years of age. Applications are available at the police department, 1800 Longwood Drive  The deadline to apply for the class is February 6, 2017.  For more information or to apply, contact Cpl. Jackson at 979-337-7324 or by email at cjackson@cityofbrenham.org
