  1. It was originally St. Francis Hospital, which is the hospital where I was born. It’s an important part of the area’s history. It would be a shame if it were torn down.

    1. I agree. I, too, was born there. I hope that they don’t demolish it. ?

  2. I can remember all the hours my dad (Buddy) and his crew put in on the numerous additions and renovations made in the 60’s thru 80″s. It was always well maintained and cared for and so were the residents..

  3. Yes wouldn’t we all like to preserve the old buildings and homes in and around Brenham? My family owns a farm out in the Greenvine/Latium area with a 100+ year old home on it. As of right now, the property taxes are frozen because my mother is in her 80’s. But once she is gone, we will no longer be able to afford the taxes on the land and it will have to be sold-I’m sure to a developer as that seems to be the only ones that buy. It is sad that my great grand parents and grand parents have worked this land and it has been in our family for over a century and we will have to let it go eventually. I truly believe that is what is happening to so many of our historic buildings and homes-the money to renovate is astronomical and then add on the high taxes and it’s just easier to get rid of it.

    1. Sorry to disagree, but you are way off about developers. I work in the industry and I believe developers constitute less than 1% of real estate transactions; the vast majority of the properties such as your grandparent’s sell to wealthy retirees who want to live quietly in the country. As well, there are many options to help the heirs retain their parents’ property, and I advise you to consult with a lawyer, real estate broker or surveyor to find out what your options might be. It is very hard to believe that you can’t afford the taxes if the subject property is ag-exempt, and if it isn’t ag- or wildlife-exempt already, well, there’s one of your options. As well, the developers that do most of the development in this area are lifetime, multi-generational locals, so really you’re likely just mad at your cousin.

  4. Let us hope the historic building does not become yet one more victim to the ugly demon of PROGRESS. Razing the heritage of Small Town is unacceptable.

  5. Just to clarify/update this information: Brenham Rest Home will be closing, but not until all the residents have secured alternative housing. Melody Chatelle, on behalf of Brenham Rest Home

    1. Melody,
Never in the long history has the resident’s families received important information like this on the radio; In lieu of a responsible party contacting the families first. In case you don’t realize it; that is unethical for you to do.

  6. Check nursing home compare on the cms site for alternative homes. You can view surveys and complaint reports, as well as see their star rating on several key issues. Over all rating, survey rating, staffing and quality measures. We at Briarwood manor care center in Bellville, are sad to see this home close. If we can be of any assistance in placement, please do not hesitate to call 979 865-3145. We are here to help during this difficult time. Placement assistance or even if its just to ask questions, get helpful tip sheet on what to ask and what to look for in a new home. Our prayers are with the residents, families and staff.

    1. Gloria Witte, because no one cared enough to effectively market this historic building and facility, it is the LONGEST continuously operating nursing home in the state of Texas and the building itself is very historic, with its location being the site of the first hospital and clinic in Brenham, and also with this site and its founding physicians being directly responsible for bringing the first of the nursing sisters to Brenham Texas…this is a shame and a disgrace for a town that prides itself on maintaining its history…

      1. As a historic building, the oldest synagogue in Texas was located in Brenham but it was moved a few years back…. Not being Jewish didn’t stop me from appreciating the history and the architecture of that building …. Brenham should embrace all their historic buildings, so sad for this rest home and it’s residents.

        1. I certainly hope the Brenham Rest Home will always be here and not be torn down only to see another parking lot or yet another large house being built in its place. This is heartbreaking news and please keep this history making building alone…
