BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD HOLDS BUDGET WORKSHOP

The Brenham School Board held a workshop meeting today (Monday) to continue gathering information for budgeting the next school year.  Kim Weatherby, Director of Business and Finance, said that she is still watching what the legislature will do on school financing.  She also explained that it looks like local property values will increase about 10 percent, but the finalized numbers won’t be in until July 25th.  Weatherby said that while the increased valuations mean more money to the district this year, the state funding will be adjusted downward next year proportionately:

Weatherby pointed out that the district’s emphasis on increasing teacher compensation the last several years has resulted in Brenham now being on par with Bryan and College Station teacher salaries.  Board vice-president Melvin Ehlert stated that he wants to see continued effort in that area so that the district does not fall behind in teacher salaries again.

Assistant Superintendent Paul Aschenbeck also updated the board on the work being done at the old Alton Elementary campus.  That campus will become the new Brenham Early Childhood Learning Center.  Aschenbeck said that crews are busy replacing flooring and ceiling tiles and painting both the inside and outside of the buildings.  The old portable buildings have been sold and are expected to be moved next week.  190 pre-kindergarten students are expected on the campus this fall.
