BRENHAM STUDENTS TAKE PART IN HISTORY DAY

Fourth grade students from Brenham’s three elementary schools were busy touring different historical locations in Brenham today (Tuesday).  The students are taking part in the 5th annual History Day organized by Main Street Brenham and numerous volunteers.  The students will learn about Brenham’s unique history at various sites such as Glissmann’s Drug Store, Alamo Alley, Toubin Park, the Giddings Stone Mansion and the Brenham Fire Museum.  At many of the stops, volunteers dressed in period outfits and portraying historical figures explain the history of the site.

The students will conclude their all day field trip at the Simon Theatre this afternoon.  On Thursday, 7th grade students from Brenham will get their chance to experience History Day at different locations.

Retired volunteer Charles Sanders talks to students at Brenham's Fire Museum.
Geneva Winkelmann and Don Barnett portray Lillie and D.C. Giddings at Toubin Park.
Volunteer Aaron Markizer explains how the Silsby steam fire engine works at Brenham's Fire Museum.
Ken Burgess as Col. David Mc Gary (L) and Lloyd Mays as Henry Foster tell students about the Burning of Brenham at the courthouse gazebo.

  1. Thanks to all our sponsors for making this event happen. And double thanks to all our volunteers for giving so much of their time! For the first time, BIDS students are learning our colorful local history, and that history can be fun! We do this because we believe that any child who takes pride in our community has the potential to become a future leader.
