BRENHAM TO CONDUCT WATER SYSTEM TESTS

The city of Brenham’s Water Department will begin maintenance to its distribution system beginning next week.

The city will be using a different disinfectant for a month.

Water system superintendent Matthew Monfreda said the routine maintenance ensures the system provides clean water to consumers, while minimizing the potential for harmful bacteria in the water system.

During this free chlorine ‘burn,’ the water disinfection process will be changed from chloramines to free chlorine, which is a stronger and faster-acting disinfectant.

Monfreda says customers may notice open fire hydrants throughout the city during the testing to allow flushing of the system and remove sediment from the pipes.

The process will be conducted throughout the month of August.

Monfreda said there may be a temporary change to the city’s water, including some discoloration or cloudiness and possibly a chlorine odor or taste. He advised consumers to run the water until it clears.  He says the water will be safe to consume throughout the process.

Customers who use tap water for kidney dialysis at home should contact their doctor to advise them if any changes are necessary. Customers using the water for aquariums should monitor chlorine levels.

  1. To clarify, this is merely routine pipe and tank preventative maintenance and has nothing to do with testing the water distribution system, as the title states.
