BRYAN COUNCILMAN UNDER FIRE

RAFAEL PENA PROFILEAt an often contentious and explosive meeting, the Bryan city council, has authorized the release of parts of a closed police investigation into a councilmember.

By a pair of 4-3 votes, the council approved the release and requested an outside investigation into the residency of Councilman Rafael Pena.

Pena was the subject of an April 20 police report obtained by KBTX in Bryan.  Police say Pena's wife, who is currently pregnant, claimed he had been abusive towards her that night and on another occasion seven months earlier.

Pena's wife is now denying she ever said her husband hit her, and Pena himself has also denied the allegation.

Bryan Police closed their investigation, and prosecutors have declined to take any action.

Prior to the vote on the release of police information, Pena used several expletives as he spoke against the release of those details.  He later apologized for the outburst.

Within the police report, Pena’s address is not within the district he represents on the council.

Pena has said he has been renovating his permanent home for the past few months, while neighbors say they have not seen any work being done on the home.
