Sixty-one year old Larry Jones, of Bryan was sentenced on Tuesday to 75 years for evading arrest with a vehicle. Jones was driving a rental vehicle north bound on Highway 6 south of College Station at night when a DPS trooper attempted to stop him for a traffic violation.

Jones refused to pull over for the trooper and drove at speeds up to 130 MPH weaving through other north-bound traffic on High-way 6. The high speed chase ended when Jones collided with the rear end of another vehicle. As a result of the high-speed crash, both occupants of the vehicle Jones hit were injured. Both occupants testified that the crash left them with severe back injuries, including ruptured disks.

A Brazos County jury found Jones guilty, and also made an affirmative finding that his vehicle was used as a deadly weapon during the offense. The affirmative finding will require the defendant to serve 30 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole. The jury deliberated approximately twenty minutes before reaching their verdict.

During the punishment phase, Prosecutors presented evidence that prior to the evading arrest offense, Jones had been convicted of vehicle theft in 1969 in Grimes County, Possession of Narcotics in 1973 in Harris County, Forgery in 1980 in Washington County, Aggravated Assault in 1989 in Washington County where he struck a man with a vehicle, and two counts of Burglary in 1992 in Burleson County.

The 1992 Burleson County conviction resulted in a 45 year prison sentence. Jones is still on parole from his Burglary conviction through 2037.
