BUC BASEBALL DROPS TWO AT SAN JAC TOURNEY

Blinn falls to No. 10 Midland 13-3 and Northwest Florida 7-5

HOUSTON, Texas – Blinn College baseball competed much better as the day went on but the Buccaneers still dropped two games to begin the San Jacinto Tournament of Champions. Blinn first lost to No. 10 Midland College 13-3 and then fell 7-5 to Northwest Florida State College.

The pair of losses drops the Blinn overall record to 2-4.

Midland 13 – Blinn 3

Blinn actually scored the first two runs of the game against Midland but then Midland charged back to outscore the Buccaneers 13-1 the rest of the way to claim a 13-3 victory in six innings.

Angel De La Fuente and Marshall Skinner each hit a home run in the loss. De La Fuente hit a home run and a single while driving in two of the three runs. Skinner took care of the other RBI with a solo shot.

Skinner gave the Buccaneers their first lead of the game with a solo home run to right to begin the second inning. Blinn wasn’t done scoring in the inning as De La Fuente also hit a solo home run to right for a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.

Midland exploded offensively with two runs in the third and four runs in each the fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-2 lead.

Blinn was able to show some signs of life in the sixth inning when Colton Parrish singled to begin the inning and De La Fuente followed with an RBI single to left to get the Buccaneers within 10-3. That would be as close as Blinn would get as Midland scored three in the bottom of the sixth to claim the 10-run victory.

Northwest Florida 7 – Blinn 5

Northwest was able to score the first four runs of the game and Blinn never saw the lead in the closing game of the day in a 7-5 loss for the Buccaneers.

Trent Murphy and Tyler Fowler each hit home runs in the loss. Murphy hit a two-run shot in the eighth while Fowler added a single and brought in two runs. Koby Collins hit a pair of singles and brought in one run. Anthony Jones and Colton Parrish each had two hits in the loss.

Northwest jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a single run in the first and three more in the second inning. Collins put Blinn on the board with an RBI single to center in the bottom of the second to score Sam McElreath to get within 4-1.

The Buccaneers got even closer in the fifth when Collins reached on a single and jogged around the bases after a home run from Fowler to left to get within 4-3. Northwest added three runs in the eighth to take a 7-3 lead.

Blinn got the game close again in the bottom of the eighth when Jones started the inning with a single and Murphy blasted a two-run home run over the wall in center to get within 7-5 after eight innings. The Buccaneers got the tying run up to bat with two outs in the ninth but Northwest was able to hold on for the two-run victory.

Blinn will play two more games in the San Jacinto Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Feb. 12. The Buccaneers will begin with a game against New Mexico Junior College at 10 a.m. and then close the tournament against Grayson College at 3 p.m.
