WEATHERFORD, Texas – Blinn baseball coach Harvey McIntyre wasn’t pleased with the way the Buccaneers competed against Weatherford here Friday.

By the end of the day Saturday, his outlook had changed.

Blinn swept Saturday’s play, 5-1 and 4-1, and won the three-game series over the Coyotes.

“We couldn’t have asked them to respond in a better way,” McIntyre said. “They grew as a team today.”

From pitching to manufacturing runs on offense, the Buccaneers held the advantage.

Despite recording only nine hits in 16 innings, McIntyre said the team did a great job of getting timely hits, moving runners and executing on the bases.

With the score tied at 1 in the top of the fifth in Game 1, sophomore first baseman Cullen Gassaway hit a sacrifice fly to score Jager Toffan. The next inning, Nolan Brown hit a single to right field to score Cullen Jozwiak. With a 4-1 lead in the top of the seventh, Gassaway cranked a home run over the left field wall.

In Game 2, after Weatherford cut the Bucs’ lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, but Blinn crossed two runs on a Jozwiak single and Jose Reyes sacrifice to extend their lead to 4-1.

Like in Game 1, the pitching took care of the rest.

Going into the series, McIntyre knew he’d have to rely on the bullpen as he gave his starting rotation a break before Region XIV Conference play begins on Thursday, and the bullpen delivered.

In 11 1-3 innings of relief in the series, Tyler Day, Dillon Mazzoccoli, Christian Thames and Keith Brenner combined to for eight hits, four runs—one earned—two walks and 11 strikeouts.

“They were awesome,” McIntyre said. “We know we are going to have to count on those guys throughout the season, and to see them come out and perform at that level is something special.”
