Hot shooting Blinn women get out to early lead in win over Coastal Bend, 72-49

Buccaneers play in first home game since Jan. 21

BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College women’s basketball was hitting its shots early on and that opened up the entire offense as the Buccaneers rolled to a 72-49 victory over Coastal Bend College Saturday afternoon inside the P.E. Building.

“We played really good basketball for 30 minutes in this game,” said Jeff Jenkins, Blinn head coach. “I tell this team that they are the best defensive team that I have coached here.”

With the win, Blinn improves to 18-9 overall and 11-6 in Region XIV play.

Denisha Ford came out shooting the ball well for the second consecutive game as she dropped in 15 points to lead the Buccaneers.

“I have been practicing my shot during practice and coach Jenkins keeps telling me to find my shot during the game,” Ford said. “Once we hit some outside shots then everything else seems to go smooth.”

Ke’Asia Williams also reached double figures with 13 points while Brenisha Coleman chipped in 10 points in the win.

Blinn didn’t dominate the entire first quarter as Coastal Bend tied the game at 7-7 with 6:30 left but the Buccaneers ended the quarter on a 13-2 run to lead 20-9 after one. Ford was hitting her outside shot and added eight points in the quarter.

The Buccaneers showed their balance in the second quarter as six different players scored points as Blinn outscored Coastal Bend 22-14 to take a 42-23 lead into halftime. Williams led the way in the second quarter with eight points.

There was more balance in the third quarter as six players scored in the quarter again as Williams led with five points. Blinn outscored Coastal Bend 16-8 to extend its lead out to 58-31 heading into the final quarter.

Blinn did let its foot up off the gas a little in the fourth as Coastal Bend outscored Blinn for the first time all game, 18-14. Alexis Oaks came in and scored all five of her points in the final quarter to put the finishing touches on the 23-point victory.

Blinn will next play at home on Saturday, Feb. 25 against Angelina College at 2 p.m. Angelina is currently 8-7 through 15 games so far in Region XIV play.

 

Blinn men use advantage in the post to beat Coastal Bend, 79-63

Buccaneers guaranteed a winning season with 16th victory

BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College men’s basketball was able use its size advantage in the low post to wear down Coastal Bend College for the 79-63 victory Saturday evening inside the P.E. Building.

“Coastal Bend is a very difficult team to play against and they have been in every single game,” said Scott Schumacher, Blinn head coach. “I thought we used our advantage inside very well.”

Blinn guaranteed itself a winning season by beating Coastal Bend and improve to 16-10 overall and 6-9 in Region XIV play.

Blinn was led by James Harrison who had a balanced game in the low post to score 18 points. LaKendric Hyson chipped in 16 points while Antione Lister had 11 points and Curtlon Wesley scored 10 points.

Coastal Bend came out controlling the pace early on as it led Blinn 19-13 with 10:50 left in the half. Blinn did find its rhythm later on in the half and scored 12 consecutive points to take a 28-23 lead.

The Buccaneers closed the first half on a 6-0 run to lead 34-27 at the half. Harrison and Tyler Barlow found space down low and score eight points each in the half.

“We really tried to take advantage of them on the rebounding side with our size,” Barlow said. “We just have to keep our intensity for the whole 40 minutes of the game.”

Blinn kept the momentum going in the second half and used a 9-2 run to take a 55-39 lead with 13:01 left. Coastal Bend score six in a row to get within 65-58 with 5:06 left but that would be as close as the Cougars would get.

Blinn eight straight points that started with a jumper from Juwan Green to take a 73-58 lead. Harrison scored 10 points in the second half while Hyson added nine points and Wesley chipped in eight to help the Buccaneers hold on to the victory.

Blinn will hit the road on Wednesday, Feb. 22 to face Lamar State College – Port Arthur for a game at 7 p.m.
