BUC SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH #12-IOWA WESTERN

For all the struggles the Blinn softball team battled in Game 1 of its doubleheader against 12th-ranked Iowa Western Wednesday, the Buccaneers quickly fixed to salvage a split.

Blinn, behind six errors in the first game—four of which came in the first inning—dropped a 12-9 shootout before responding with a 7-1 win in Game 2—one in which the Bucs committed just one error.

It wasn’t just the defense that helped the Bucs in the latter game. Freshman pitcher Mariah Gibson tossed seven innings of five-hit, one-run ball. The Reivers lone run came in the top of the second after Blinn scored two runs in the bottom of the first.

Marissa Purcell helped the Bucs pull away in the fourth with a two-out triple that scored Allie Piro. It sparked a run of three straight RBI hits for Blinn as it built 6-1 lead.

Piro made it 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth off an Iowa Western error.

Piro was 1-for-3 with a two runs scored in the second game. Purcell and Sydney Wellmann had two hits.

Despite facing a six-run deficit in the first game, Blinn battled back to take an 8-6 lead over Iowa Western after three innings on RBI hits from Carla Noel, Carley Latta and Peyton Webb.

Not to be outdone, the Reivers responded to Blinn’s four-run third with a four-run fourth to take a 12-8 lead.

Blinn was never able to respond.

Freshman pitcher Jaiden Rawls took the tough-luck loss in the circle, despite allowing just four earned runs. She struck out three and walked three.
