Buccaneers score 30 combined runs in sweep of Alvin, 20-0 and 10-0

ALVIN, Texas – Blinn College softball scored 30 combined runs and pitched two shutouts in sweeping a doubleheader at Alvin Community College by the score 20-0 and 10-0 Saturday afternoon.

“We pitched a two- and three-hitter today with no walks combined with solid defense,” said Rick Church, Blinn head coach. “We picked up four important conference wins this weekend.”

With the pair of victories, Blinn improves its overall record to 19-11 and 5-1 in Region XIV play.

Blinn 20 – Alvin 0

Blinn poured on the runs late in the game to pull away from Alvin in the doubleheader opener to win 20-0 in six innings.

Sam Junkin pitched all six innings and allowed three hits in the shutout victory while striking out two.

Shelby Achille led Blinn with four RBIs on three singles. Nicole Garcia and Emily Noah each brought in three runs while Colleen Bentke brought in a pair in the lopsided victory.

Blinn started the scoring early on as Garcia started the first with a walk and then scored on an RBI single by Achille to left for a 1-0 lead. Noah made the score 2-0 with an RBI ground out to score Kalli Edwards.

The Buccaneers kept the offense rolling in the second inning as Emily Taylor walked and Morgan Gray singled to get on base and both scored on a two-run single by Achille for a 4-0 lead. Noah followed with a two-run double to left for a 6-0 lead.

After two scoreless innings, Blinn got back on the scoreboard in the fifth as Gray reached base with a one-out single and then scored on an RBI single by Edwards for a 7-0 lead. The Buccaneers emphatically closed out the game in the sixth inning with 13 runs.

Taylor brought in the first run of the sixth with an fielder’s choice to score Makalah Norman for the eighth run. Gabriela Gomez scored on an Alvin error and then Chelsea Armendariz knocked in a run with an RBI single to left for a 10-0 lead.

Garcia followed with a two-run triple to left for a 12-0 lead. Achille brought in the 13th run with a single to left. Amy Alexander kept the scoring going by drawing a bases loaded walk for a 14-0 advantage. Achille and Noah scored on an Alvin error for a 16-0 lead. Bentke followed with a two-run triple to right for an 18-0 lead.

Armendariz doubled to center for the 19th run and then Garcia capped the scoring with an RBI single to left to give the Buccaneers a 20-0 lead that would hold up until the final out in the bottom of the sixth.

Blinn scored half the amount of runs in the second game but it was still enough to earn a 10-0 victory over Alvin in five innings to complete the sweep.

Bentke pitched all five innings and allowed only two hits in the shutout victory while striking out four.

Armendariz knocked in two runs and had two singles while Katy Sawyer also had two RBIs and a single. Garcia, Edwards, Taylor, Calli Birch and Gray each had an RBI in the lopsided victory.

Garcia got Blinn going in the opening inning with a lead-off double and then came around to score on an error for a 1-0 lead. The Buccaneers kept it rolling in the second inning when Alyssa Hitt started the inning with a single and came in to score on an RBI single by Gray to right for a 2-0 lead. Garcia drove in the third run with a ground out and then Gray scored on an error for a 4-0 lead.

After not scoring in the third, Blinn got back on track in the fourth when Achille doubled with one out and then scored on an RBI single by Armendariz for a 5-0 lead. Birch drove in the sixth run with a single to center and then Sawyer drove in a pair with a single to left for an 8-0 lead.

Blinn took the opportunity to end the game early in the fifth as Armendariz drove in Abby Olejniczak for the ninth run. Taylor made the score 10-0 for the Buccaneers with a sacrifice fly to center. Blinn would hold on to beat Alvin by the mercy rule in the fifth inning.

Blinn will continue conference play with a doubleheader at Coastal Bend College Saturday, March 25 beginning at 1 p.m.
