Buccaneers held a 45-33 lead at the half but falter in second half

ATHENS, Texas – For the second consecutive game, No. 22 Blinn College women’s basketball had a rough third quarter as the Buccaneers led by 12 at halftime only to lose 94-70 to No. 4 Trinity Valley Community College Wednesday evening in Athens.

Blinn was outscored 61-25 in the second half to fall to 21-8 overall and 13-6 in Region XIV play. This is the first two-game losing streak for the Buccaneers all season.

Jeliah Preston had a solid first half by scoring 19 of her 21 points in the opening 20 minutes. Ekiya Gray scored 13 of her 18 points in the first half while Penina Faumui finished with 14 points.

Blinn got off to a great start for a road team as the Buccaneers jumped out to a 24-20 lead after a quarter and then extended that lead to 45-33 at the half. Blinn even came out and scored the first six points of the second half to take a 51-33 lead but the game went downhill from there.

Trinity Valley refused to give up and came roaring back to outscore Blinn 61-19 in the middle of the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter. The Buccaneers were outscored 32-18 in the third and 29-7 in the fourth quarter for the loss.

Blinn will close out the regular season with a home game against Coastal Bend College on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. This game will be a student appreciation game with 50-cent hot dogs and the sophomores will be honored before the game as well.

MEN

Blinn was unable to capitalize on open looks

PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Blinn College men’s basketball had enough open looks but couldn’t get shots to fall in a 78-55 loss to Lamar State College – Port Arthur Wednesday night in Port Arthur.

The Buccaneers had a hard time putting the ball through the hoop and fell to 20-9 overall and 9-9 in Region XIV play. The loss to Port Arthur snaps a two-game winning streak for the Buccaneers.

“We competed and played hard but just couldn’t make shots,” said Blinn coach Scott Schumacher.

Victor Dukes was the only player to reach double figures for Blinn with 10 points. Morris Dunnigan scored eight points while Corey Henderson, Donzell Henton and Emmanuel Sanosi each scored five points.

Port Arthur shot out right from the beginning and held a 37-21 lead at the half. The second half didn’t get much better as Port Arthur outscored Blinn 41-34 in the second half to take a 23-point victory.

Blinn will finish off the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 27 against Coastal Bend College at 4 p.m. This will be the student appreciation game with 50-cent hot dogs.
