BUC WOMEN/MEN FALL AT WEATHERFORD

Defensive lapses hurt Blinn women on the road

Missed free throws for Blinn College hurt in the final minutes

WOMEN

WEATHERFORD, Texas – Offenses usually take a little time to find their stride in the beginning of the season but for Blinn College women’s basketball it is the defense that was costly Nov. 11. Weatherford College took advantage of the Buccaneers and its low-post defense in securing an 88-76 victory in Weatherford.

Blinn did have a handful of girls reach double figures as Ashley Cherry led the Buccaneers with 13 points while Katelynn Johnson and Chant Lewis each finished with 12 points. Nancy Warioba and Penina Faumui each earned 10 points in the loss.

Weatherford had a game plan of hitting the low-post and it countered that with solid outside shooting. As a team, Weatherford hit five shots from beyond the 3-pooint line and grabbed a 46-29 lead at the break.

“You can’t give up 46 points in a half and expect to win the game,” said Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins. “We gave up too many easy baskets and their post players killed us tonight.”

Jenkins said that he did like the effort late from his team in getting within six points late in the game. Sending Weatherford too many time to the foul line late allowed the home team to pull away for the 12-point victory.

Blinn, now 3-2 in the preseason, will be home on Nov. 15 against McLennan Community College at 2 p.m.

MEN

WEATHERFORD, Texas – Blinn College players got a good preview of what a conference road game will be like in its trip to Weatherford College Nov. 11. The Buccaneers put forth the effort to get a victory but missed free throws down the stretch were costly as Weatherford men’s basketball pulled away for an 83-77 victory.

The loss is the first for Blinn on the season as the Buccaneers shot just 18-of-31 from the free throw line in the loss. Even with the misses at the foul line, Lionheart Leslie hit a 3-pointer late in the game to get Blinn within three in the final minutes but Weatherford was able to hit their free throws.

Leslie turned in a great game, even in a losing effort, for Blinn with 24 points. Revey Norton finished with 14 points and Trey Edwards had 10 points. Ja’Cardo Hawkins had foul trouble nearly all night but was still able to finish with 11 points.

“It was a good game for us,” said Blinn head coach Scott Schumacher. “Weatherford is traditionally a good basketball program and for us to have an opportunity late in the game to win one on the road was good.”

Missed free throws ruined what could have been a solid road win. After the game, Schumacher said that his team had an opportunity to grab some free points at the foul line but missed out on those chances and that they need to hit those shots to win games like this on the road.

“This game was a good preview for the players to see what it will be like during conference play,” Schumacher said. “It allows them to understand the level that they need to come with every game.”

Blinn College, now 3-1 in the preseason, will be back home on Nov. 14 against Texas Southern University Club at 7:30 p.m.
