“There are areas that we have to get better like transition defense but other than I thought we played good,” said Blinn head coach Scott Schumacher.

Point guard John Dewey was a big reason that Blinn improved to 6-0 on the season as he scored 18 points and helped facilitate the offense while finding seems in the Victoria full-court pressure defense.

“It feels good when the offense is working but we still need to listen to coach and keep working hard,” Dewey said after the game.

Morris Dunnigan was the leading scorer for the Buccaneers with 29 points while Corey Henderson was close behind with 26 points. Victor Dukes scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half while Jaequon Brown also chipped in 17 points.

Victoria hung with Blinn at the beginning of the game with its long-range shooting but the Buccaneers grabbed a little momentum with a Henderson 3-pointer at the 6:30 mark of the first half for a 39-26 lead.

Victoria was able to get within three points with 2:33 left in the half but then Blinn closed out the half by scoring the final 13 points to earn a 57-41 lead at the break. Dunnigan was hitting just about everything in the first half and scored 19 points while Henderson chipped in 13.

Blinn continued that momentum by starting the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 67-43 lead. Dukes had a strong second half of cleaning up the boards and getting easy buckets to score 15 points while Henderson added 13.

Both Blinn and Victoria scored 67 points in the second half but the game was never in question for the Buccaneers to open up the season with six straight victories.

Blinn will wrap up its home stand on Tuesday, Nov. 17 with a match up against Weatherford College at 7:30 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 32 NJCAA national championships since 1987. For more information, visit www.buccaneersports.com.
