Blinn men lose conference thriller to Angelina, 77-75

BRENHAM, Texas — The Blinn College men’s basketball team came back in the final seconds of the game to even the score after trailing the majority of the game. However, a final-second bucket allowed Angelina to take a 77-75 victory over Blinn on Wednesday night in the Kruse Center.

“I was very proud of the way our guys played in the second half; they fought very hard,” said Scott Schumacher, Blinn head coach. “The crowd support that we had in that game was really phenomenal and really helped our players go to a different level with their playing ability.”

Markques Houston led the Buccaneers for the second game in a row with 19 points. Curtlon Wesley was next with 16 points, Fred Tottenham and Antione Lister followed with 13 points each, and Tony Lewis also hit double-digit points with 10.

Angelina built an early lead in the first quarter to pull ahead of Blinn 41-28 at the half.

The Buccaneers offense exploded in the second half as Blinn outscored Angelina 47-36. Blinn trailed the entire second half until Wesley broke away for a slam dunk to even the score 75-75 with 13 seconds left. Following a timeout, Angelina scored a bucket with one second on the clock to win the game.

With the loss, the Buccaneers fall to 5-6 in Region XIV conference play and 14-7 overall.

The Buccaneers will head on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 3 to face off against Jacksonville College at 4 p.m.

Buc women fall to Kilgore on the road, 75-62

KILGORE, Texas — The Blinn College women’s basketball team fell to Kilgore College, 75-62, despite playing a strong final quarter on Wednesday night in Kilgore.

“We played hard, but Kilgore made some tough shots and we could not overcome that on the road,” said Jeff Jenkins, Blinn head coach.

On Blinn’s side, Rayanna Carter and Alanna Spencer led the offense with 11 points each. Ke’Asia Williams followed with 10 points, while Missy Archie chipped in with nine points.

Kilgore College built an early 25-13 lead in the first quarter that it would never surrender. In the second quarter the Buccaneers picked up the pace to outscore Kilgore 13-12 and cut Kilgore’s lead to 37-26 at the half.

Kilgore took back the momentum in the third quarter by scoring 29 points to hold a 66-48 lead. In the final quarter the Buccaneers played their best quarter and held Kilgore to nine points, while scoring 14 points.

With the loss, the Buccaneers fall to 3-9 in Region XIV conference play and 10-12 overall.

Blinn will continue conference play on the road on Saturday, Feb. 3 when the Buccaneers take on Bossier Parish Community College at 2 p.m. Earlier in the season, Bossier Parish defeated Blinn, 92-89, in overtime.
