Buccaneers eke out a win on the road over Kilgore, 61-60

Last second shot by Kilgore ruled a 2-point shot

KILGORE, Texas – A couple of inches made all the difference for the Blinn College women’s basketball team as Kilgore College tried for a 3-point shot to tie but the made basket was ruled a 2-point shot, giving the Buccaneers a slim 61-60 victory Jan. 7 in Kilgore.

Referees ruled that the final Kilgore shot had a foot on the line and the couple of inches was enough to help Blinn escape with the road victory to improve its conference record to 4-2 and overall record to 11-5.

Katelynn Johnson led the Buccaneers with 19 points with the help of five 3-pointers. Nancy Warioba scored 10 points while picking up 13 rebounds for a double-double. Brianna Luton hit a big shot late and totaled nine points in the victory.

The game was close throughout as Kilgore held on to a 34-33 lead at the half but Blinn was able to play slightly better in the second half to come away with the win.

Down the stretch, Luton made a huge 3-point shot to give the Buccaneers a one point lead and then Johnson hit a pair of free throws for a 61-58 advantage. That is when Kilgore came down with only eight seconds left and hit a shot with a foot on the line to make the score closer but Blinn still came away with the victory.

Blinn will next be at home against Tyler Junior College on Jan. 10 at 4 p.m.
