BUCS BASEBALL DROPS TWO TO GALVESTON

Blinn outscored 18-3 in pair of home games

BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College baseball did not start off conference play the way it would have liked, falling in both games to Galveston College 6-0 and 12-3 Thursday evening at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham.

The pair of losses lowers the Buccaneers record to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in Region XIV play.

Galveston 6 – Blinn 0

Blinn had a hard time getting hits against Galveston in the opening game and an even tougher time keeping the Galveston hits in the ballpark as Galveston hit three home runs on its way to a 6-0 shutout victory.

Galveston scored two runs in the first and fourth inning and single runs in the second and fifth to supply more than enough run support.

Patrick King, Hillin Warren and Elijah MacNamee were the only Blinn batters to get a single in the loss.

Nick Masarik picked up the loss on the mound for the Buccaneers as Galveston made him pay for his mistakes. Masarik went five innings and gave up nine hits while only four of the six runs given up were earned. Dakota Brewton came on in relief in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings while striking out one.

Galveston 12 – Blinn 3

Blinn played much better offensively in the second game and even held a 3-2 lead after five innings but one disastrous inning gave Galveston the momentum and a 12-3 victory in eight innings.

Walker Winders had a solid game at the plate with a two-run double while MacNamee had the other RBI on a single. Jay Anderson, King, Austen Swift and Sam McElreath each had a single in the loss.

Pitching was a struggle for the Buccaneers as they issued 14 walks to Galveston in the loss.

Blinn was able to strike first in the fourth inning when Swift and McElreath walked and then Winders followed with a two-run double deep to center for a 2-0 lead. Galveston scored two runs in the fifth to tie the game 2-2.

The game wasn’t tied for long as Anderson singled to begin the bottom of the fifth and came around to score on a single by MacNamee to give Blinn a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, that would be the final time Blinn would touch the plate as Galveston poured it on with 10 runs in the final three innings to end the game early in the eighth.

Blinn will play Galveston on the road Saturday, Feb. 27 for a double-header that begins at 12 p.m.
