Sophomore forward Ekiya Gray and head coach Jeff Jenkins each earned NJCAA all-tournament recognition after leading the Blinn College women’s basketball team to the second round of the NJCAA National Championships.

Gray was named to the NJCAA Division I women’s basketball all-tournament team while Jenkins earned the Alberta Lee Cox Sportsmanship Award.

“Ekiya is awesome and played a great tournament and she has been so versatile for us all year,” Jenkins said. “They said the sportsmanship award was to Jeff Jenkins, but let’s be honest, the award really is because of the sportsmanship of the entire team.”

Gray averaged 14.5 points and eight rebounds per game in the two games Blinn played at the national tournament. Gray led the Buccaneers with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting while hauling in 11 rebounds in the opening game of the tournament against Itawamba Community College. For the season, Gray averaged 13.9 points per game in 35 games and 7.5 rebounds per game.

“I didn’t even know there was an all-tournament team, but when I found out I thought it was an amazing honor,” Gray said. “Playing at nationals was a good experience because you get to play new teams and all of the other teams wish they were playing there.”

Gray was also named all-region and all-conference while leading Blinn to a 26-9 overall record and a Region XIV Tournament championship. The Buccaneers opened the national tournament by beating Itawamba Community College 59-39, then lost to the College of Southern Idaho 75-52 in the second round.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 32 NJCAA national championships since 1987. For more information, visit www.buccaneersports.com.
