Buccaneers run rule Port Arthur to open sophomore day doubleheader, 8-0

Blinn loses second game to Port Arthur and falls into second place in Region XIV South

BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College softball scored early and often to beat Lamar State College – Port Arthur 8-0 in five innings to open a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Hohlt Park.

Port Arthur did get the better of Blinn in the second game 5-2 to split the doubleheader. With the split, Blinn moves to 33-15 overall. The Buccaneers are now 17-5 and tied in the loss column with San Jacinto College-South but San Jacinto gets the top seed in the region tournament by way of the tiebreaker.

Blinn had no trouble putting runs on the board in the opening game as the Buccaneers scored seven runs in the first three innings and won 8-0 over Port Arthur in five innings.

Shelby Achille had a double and two singles to bring in three runs to lead the way. Nicole Garcia brought in a pair of runs with two singles. Emily Noah, Amy Alexander and Gabriela Gomez each had an RBI in the win.

Colleen Bentke took advantage of all the run support and didn’t allow a run in five innings on four hits while striking out four to get the win.

Blinn got it started right from the beginning as Nicole Garcia started it off in the first with a single and then scored on an RBI double by Achille for a 1-0 lead. Alexander made it 2-0 with an RBI single up the middle.

The Buccaneers kept it rolling in the second inning as Achille brought in two more runs with a double to right for a 4-0 lead. Gomez later singled to center to give the Buccaneers a 5-0 edge.

Blinn took advantage of an error in the third inning as Alyssa Hitt and Morgan Gray both scored on a Port Arthur mistake for a 7-0 lead.

After not scoring in the fourth inning, Blinn made up for it in the fifth as Kalli Edwards reached base with a two-out single and then scored after an RBI single by Achille to give Blinn an 8-0 victory in the fifth.

Between games, the Bucs honored the 2017 Sophomore class.

Port Arthur 5 – Blinn 2

Port Arthur was able to get the best of Blinn in the second game of the doubleheader by scoring three runs down the stretch and pulling off a 5-2 victory to force a split of the pair.

Noah had a solo home run for one of the Blinn runs and Alexander brought in the other run with a double. Achille and Gomez each had a double in the loss.

Port Arthur was able to strike first in the second inning with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. Noah helped the Buccaneers cut the deficit in half with a solo home run to center to get within 2-1. Blinn later tied the game in the third inning as Achille reached with a one-out double and then scored after an RBI double by Alexander to knot the game at 2-2.

Unfortunately, only Port Arthur scored runs down the stretch as the Seahawks scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to steal a 5-2 victory.

Blinn will finish out the regular season on Monday, April 24 with a doubleheader against Coastal Bend College beginning at 1 p.m. at Hohlt Park.
