Seven players reach double-digit points
BRENHAM, Texas – Houston Community College tried to apply as much pressure as it could but that didn’t bother Blinn College men’s basketball much as the Buccaneers cruised to a 130-81 romp Thursday night inside the PE Building in Brenham.
Seven players scored in double figures as Blinn was able to compile its highest scoring game of the season to move to 3-0 early in the year.
“I thought our guys competed more consistently for the whole game,” said Blinn head coach Scott Schumacher. “The non-conference games are good for us to find out what we need to get better at.”
For the third consecutive game, Corey Henderson led Blinn in scoring, this time totaling 22 points in the win. Morris Dunnigan put together a complete game with eight in the first half and 10 in the second for 18 points while James Harrison found himself in the right position often and tallied 17 points on the night.
“Coach is always telling me to go opposite the ball and the guards did a good job of finding me at the right times,” Harrison said after the game. “We are starting to mature more on the court and focus on putting together two consistent halves.”
David Blaylock scored all 13 of his points in the second half while Jarius Kesee, Victor Dukes and John Dewey each scored 10 points in the blowout. Blinn’s high-scoring offense now averages 119 points per game through three.
Blinn jumped out to a 19-2 lead to begin the game and didn’t look back from there. Henderson scored five early point to pile up on the lead. Houston tried fighting back by applying pressure which did create a few turnovers for Blinn but the lead was never in danger.
“Their press was good because it gave us the opportunity to break the press in a game situation,” Schumacher said. “They played a lot of man defense as well.”
Henderson paced the Buccaneers with 16 points in the first half while Harrison added 15 as Blinn led 60-30 at the break.
It was more of the same in the second half as Dunnigan had his offense going early on the second half, scoring 10 of his 18 in the final 20 minutes. With the big lead, Blinn was able to see how the reserve players performed and Blaylock and Kesee each scored that they were viable scoring options, scoring 13 and 10 respectively in the final half to pull away for the 49-point victory.
Blinn will again be at home Saturday, Nov. 7 hosting Texas Southern University Club at 4 p.m. inside the PE Building.
