BUCS SOFTBALL CLOSES OUT WEEKEND WITH WIN

Blinn College ends Galveston trip with a 4-1 record

GALVESTON, Texas – Blinn College softball closed out its trip to Galveston by pulling out a 3-1 victory over University of Houston-Victoria Jan. 31 in Galveston to close out the weekend with a 4-1 record to begin the season.

Blinn did suffer its first loss earlier in the day as Angelina College beat the Buccaneers 14-3.

The Buccaneers were able to jump on UH-Victoria early on as runs were hard to come by. Meghann Wrinkle drove in the first run of the game in the first inning to give Blinn a 1-0 lead.

Blinn took advantage of scoring chances early as Avery Mullendore and Kayla Lahrmann each scored in the second inning to give Blinn a 3-0 advantage after two innings. UH-Victoria was able to get a single run in the sixth but the Buccaneers pitching and defense were able to hold off UH-Victoria from scoring any more runs.

Mariah Gibson did the job in the circle by pitching all seven innings and only allowing two hits while striking out three to get the win.

Blinn didn’t have as much luck in the opening game of the day against Angelina as the Roadrunners scored five runs in the first two innings to dig a big hole for the Buccaneers.

Cheyenne Trader did get a run back in the second inning with an RBI double to right to make the score 5-1.

A grand slam by Angelina in the fourth made the deficit even bigger for Blinn but they made an attempt at cutting into the lead in the fifth. Jordan Wilkins hit an RBI double and then later scored in the inning to make it 9-3 but that would be as close as Blinn would get as Angelina tacked on another four runs to run away with the game.

Delilah Pecheco, Gibson and Katie Andrie each had two hits against Angelina but the Blinn offense was overshadowed by Angelina.

Blinn will be on the road next weekend when it travels to Atmore, Ala., for seven games. The Buccaneers start the weekend Feb. 6 against Faulkner State Community College at 10 a.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 30 NJCAA national championships since 1987. For more information, visit www.buccaneersports.com.
