BURTON DOUBLES SALES TAX REBATES

  

The small city of Burton has seen a big increase in sales tax rebates in the past year, a 100 percent increase.

          Reports from the State Comptroller’ s Office say that this month Burton will receive $3379 in sales tax rebates.  Last October  the city received $1670.  That is an increase of 102 percent in one year’s time.  For the year so far, Burton has received $20,126, a 32.4 percent increase over last year at this time.

          The city of Brenham also showed an increase in sales tax rebates. Brenham is getting $476,517 in sales tax rebates this month.  That is a 2.4 percent increase over October of last year when the city received $465,023.  Brenham has received $4.5 million in sales tax rebates so far this year, a 7.5 percent increase over last year at this time.

          Washington also had an increase in sales tax rebates this month.  The county is getting back $203,686, a 2 percent increase over last October.  The county has received $1.9 million in sales tax rebates so far this year, a 5.7 percent increase over last year.

          State Comptroller Susan Combs released a statement this week saying her office distributed $580 million in monthly sales tax rebates to local governments this month.

          The Comptroller says the state had just over $2 billion in sales tax revenues  in the month of September. She said there was growth in collections in construction, telecommunications and retail sectors.  State Sales tax revenue has now increased for 42 consecutive months.
