BURTON ISD TO DISCUSS BECOMING DISTRICT OF INNOVATION

The Burton school board will discuss the possibility of becoming a District of Innovation (DOI) during their meeting Thursday.

Becoming a District of Innovation allows school districts to be exempt from a number of state statues, as well as allowing them to have greater local control and increased flexibility. In December, the Brenham ISD board of trustees adopted a resolution officially declaring their interest in becoming a DOI.

Burton Superintendent Edna Kennedy says they are just beginning the process into exploring what it would mean to become a DOI. “We are looking into this to make sure we are addressing all of our student’s needs and how to do that more appropriately" said Kennedy.

In other business, the board will consider a joint election contract with the City of Burton. A school board election will be held on May 6th for positions currently held by Felton Cox, Jeff Harmel, and Misty Lucherk. The board will also appoint election officials.

Also at Thursday’s meeting:

The board will hear the Superintendent’s report, which will discuss the Master Facility Site Plan. The Burton school board met last Thursday to discuss the plan that is being looked at again after voters rejected the $18.5 million bond issue in November.

The board will meet in an executive session to discuss an evaluation of Superintendent Kennedy. They will also discuss her contract and salary.

The Burton school board will meet on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the administration office located at 701 North Railroad Street.
