BURTON MAN IDENTIFIED AS PERSON SHOT BY LEE COUNTY DEPUTIES

The man who was shot by Lee County deputies Wednesday evening has been identified at Robert Louis Luza, of Burton.

Authorities say the 66-year-old man was taken to CHI St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan after he was shot. There is no word on his condition.

As previously reported, two deputies responded to a call of a suspicious person Wednesday evening on CR 424, just north of FM 141 near Dime Box.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Luza dressed only in his underwear. Deputies say he refused cooperate with them and against repeated commands, Luza jumped into his truck. The deputies then deployed a taser, which was unsuccessful in subduing him.

Luza then managed to get behind the wheel of his truck and rammed the deputies’ patrol vehicle. It was then that a deputy shot Luza three times, hitting him in the chest twice.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office says the deputy who shot him has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the Texas Rangers’ investigation into the incident.
