BURTON SCHOOL BOARD EXPECTED TO ADOPT BUDGET AND TAX RATE TODAY

The Burton School Board is expected to adopt the 2016-2017 budget and tax rate when they meet today (Monday).

The proposed tax rate is $1.182 per $100 valuation, which slightly up over a penny from last year’s tax rate of $1.170.

When the board met on August 15th, they set a proposed budget at a 4-percent increase over the last budget. The new budget has been proposed to be set at $5,110,000. District officials have said that revenues to the district are expected to be $259,000 short of the budget. This fall in revenue is due mainly to a drop in mineral values.

However, the shortfall in the budget is expected to be made up when the Texas Education Agency adjusts their funding to match the district’s new enrollment, which has risen to 440 students.

A public meeting will be held today at the start of the meeting for comments on both the tax rate and the proposed budget. The Burton School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the District Administrative Office on North Railroad Street.
