BURTON SCHOOL BOARD HEARS AUDIT REPORT

The Burton School Board approved the 2013-2014 Audit Report of the District’s finances at their meeting last night.  The audit found no discrepancies, although it pointed to two areas the board should address.  It showed the District’s operating fund about $150,000 below what the State considers ideal.  Also, actual expenses exceeded the budget by more than 10 percent in several categories.  Auditor Jim Plummer reminded the board that the budget can be amended up until August each year and he recommended bringing the operating fund up to the recommended amount to avoid raising a flag with the State.

The board took no action on an agenda item for designating a portion of the funds from the sale of the Old Elementary School Property to pay off an existing loan.  The board decided it would be better to place the proceeds into the operating fund and keep making payments on the loan.  This would bring the fund up to the State recommended value.  Also discussed was the replacement of a 10 ton air conditioner at the Old Elementary School that was recently vandalized and had the copper stolen.  The low bid on the replacement was $15,000. and the school’s insurance will only cover about 60 percent of that after the deductible and depreciation.  The board wants to replace the vandalized unit before the mid-February closing date on the sale of the property to avoid putting the sale in jeopardy.  In September of last year the board approved selling the Old Elementary School property to American Kinetics for $245,000.

The board voted to offer a teaching contract to Bruno Casall to teach Spanish next year.  The offer of the contract was necessary for him to obtain a work visa.  The board voted to table the other employment contracts on the agenda until next month when a new Superintendent should be in place.

During the open forum potion of the meeting, High School Band Director Larry Silcox requested that the board consider replacing the band uniforms.  The current uniforms have been in use since 1997 and have exceeded their life expectancy.  He also requested funds for replacing some of the older band instruments, some of which are more than 20 years old.

The next Burton School Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10th.
