BURTON SCHOOL BOARD OPPOSES NEW SCHOOL RATING SYSTEM

The Burton school board has registered their objections to a new method to rate school accountability in Texas.

The Texas Education Agency will be implementing a new system of school accountability in the coming year, which includes rating schools by A-through-F letter grades.

The current system rates schools as “met standards” or “improvement required.”

The Burton trustees have adopted a resolution calling for a “more appropriate” method for school accountability.

According to Burton Superintendent Edna Kennedy, the resolution requests the state Legislature “develop a system that addresses local and internal systems and empowers school districts, while continuing to meet general state standards”.

Last month, the Brenham school district issued a resolution opposing the A-to-F rating legislation.

Brenham Superintendent Walter Jackson says he “believes it will do more harm than good.”
