BURTON SCHOOL BOARD TO DISCUSS 2017-2018 CALENDAR

The Burton School Board will discuss the 2017-2018 school calendar during their meeting today (Thursday).

The regular school board meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Burton ISD Administration Office.

Prior to discussing the calendar, the board will consider approving the Burton ISD District of Innovation Plan. The designation allows for districts to have more flexibility with a number of issues such as calendar decisions.

The proposed calendar has a start date of Tuesday, August 22 for students. Staff will return the week of Monday, August 7 to address professional development needs.

“The week of August 14 will allow our staff to truly have some traditional workdays for organizing their classrooms and planning instruction” says Superintendent Edna Kennedy. “We really feel like this next school year there will be significantly more preparation time in the calendar to assess and meet student needs.”

Also during the meeting the board will:

  • Discuss the Burton Elementary, Secondary, and District improvement plans
  • Consider a statement of impact from Harmony School of Excellence in Houston
  • Consider Diagnostician and Speech/Language Pathologist Assistant Contracts
  • Consider approval of Lightspeed as the Provider of the District internet content filter

The board will also enter into executive session to discuss teacher contracts and Burton Special Services Cooperative Employees. Any action taken from the discussion will take place in open session.

The Burton School Board will hold a workshop to discuss the master facility site plan. The workshop will take place at 5:30 p.m., prior to the school board meeting at the Burton ISD Administration office.

The master facility site plan is being looked at again after voters rejected the $18.5 million bond issue in November.

  1. I just read an article that property taxes are going up at least 10% again this year. We can not afford any more taxes!! We already voted the rediculous 18.5 million dollar bond issue once, I say we WILL do it again. We can not afford any more taxes!! We are still paying on the first bond for the new elementary school, and we have around 17 years left to pay on it. The school board is going to spend themselves out of a school district. When you raise the taxes as much as is proposed, and the people can not afford the taxes, they will leave. If they leave, no more school. Common sense people!!

    1. I don’t like high taxes but the fact is that young families are moving to Burton on a regular basis because of the successful school district.
