BURTON TO OPEN SCHOOL YEAR TUESDAY

Four-hundred-fifty-five students are expected on the first day of classes, Tuesday in the Burton School District.

New and returning teachers have been participating in professional development programs.

Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy says students should be prepared to, “Start the new year off with a positive attitude, ready to learn and grow.”

Kennedy says the district, “will focus on a vision of a bright and successful future for the students.”.

Kennedy says the staff and faculty want to, “do everything possible to smooth the transition from last school year and the summer into the 2017-18 school year.”

  1. Thank you Burton ISD for continuing to serve the growing student population with the limited space available. I know it is difficult for the staff and students to work as hard as they do in the cramped spaces they are in. It’s unfortunate that the bond initiative didn’t pass and so as time passes until some solution is agreed upon, the cramped spaces will continue to become more cramped.

At the bond election last year it was reported that the student body measured at 400. Some said that the student body wasn’t really growing that fast. With the number reported today, I beg to differ. This number will continue to rise, and we will still have some in the community saying “it was big enough when I went there”. To those I say, this little school is not so little anymore, and it is very short sighted to have that attitude now.

I know that no one likes paying more taxes, but there are times where it becomes something that has to be done to fix a problem. I would encourage anyone having an issue with tax reform to contact our State Representative, Leighton Schubert, or our State Senator, Lois Kolkhorst, and encourage them to push for property tax reform. That fix has to come from Austin, not the BISD School Board.
