BUSINESSMAN FILES SUIT AGAINST GRIMES & MONTGOMERY COUNTIES

An Anderson businessman has filed a federal lawsuit against officials in Grimes and Montgomery Counties.

Leslie Shipman filed the suit against the two counties, the two sheriffs, the Grimes County district attorney and members of the Montgomery County Auto Theft Task Force.

Shipman, owner of an automobile maintenance shop in Anderson for nearly four years, claims he has been harassed by deputies with the Grimes County and Montgomery County sheriff's offices, as well as the Montgomery County Auto Theft Task Force.

The suit says two deputies went to Shipman's business multiple times starting in 2013 checking the VIN numbers on the vehicles and looking for ones that were stolen.

Shipman and two others were arrested in June for organized criminal activity, during an automobile auction.  Fifty-six cars were seized from the auction.

Shipman’s attorneys say the vehicles were not stolen and attempts to clear up the case were ignored by authorities.

Shipman says in this suit, this is a case of – in his words – “small town politics where local officials are using the criminal justice system to drive a politically unpopular resident out of town.”

Officials in Grimes and Montgomery Counties have not commented.
