A number of possible candidates have openly expressed interest in running for a political opening that doesn’t exist yet.

District 13 State Representative Lois Kolkhorst was just re-elected to the position she’s held since 2000.  However, she is also running in a special election for the District-18 State Senate seat being vacated by the new State Comptroller-elect Glen Hager.

Hager’s resignation from the senate becomes official December 5th.  The special election is set for Saturday, December 6th.

If Kolkhorst were to win the Senate race, another special election would have to be held to fill her position in the State House.

According to the Brenham Banner Press, among those expressing interest in a possible run are current Austin County Judge Carolyn Bilski and energy consultant Becky Berger of Schulenburg.

Attorney Leighton Shubert of Caldwell confirmed that he is thinking about a run but has not made any definite plans.

Another name being bandied about is attorney Andy Taylor, who has offices in Brenham and Houston.

Kolkhorst, meanwhile, has drawn two opponents so far in the State Senate race, Fort Bend Republican businessmen Gary Gates and Charles Gregory III.

Early voting gets underway Wednesday, November 26.
