CHAPPELL HILL CULTURAL HERITAGE GROUP HOSTS MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM

The community of Chappell Hill will be honoring those that have sacrificed their lives during active military duty.  “As our nation honors those individuals that have given the ultimate sacrifice, the Chappell Hill Cultural Heritage Group invites the families of our military heroes as well as our veterans and the entire community to take a moment to honor those that have died in service to our country,” announced Madelyn O’Brien, Founder & Executive Director of the Chappell Hill Cultural Heritage Group.

The program begins at 9AM on Monday, May 30th and will take place at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, 3670 Nicholson Lake Road in Chappell Hill.  “Each year, we present a Memorial Day program that includes volunteer guest speakers, musical tributes, wreath laying ceremony, student essay readings and the sounding of TAPS. The organization is committed to honoring all the lives sacrificed in order to preserve our freedoms.  The ceremony will include a Buffalo Soldier Troop from Buffalo History Museum in Houston and Lorenzo Wilborn, a veteran of the United States Army whom, after earning numerous recognitions from the Fifth Army Headquarters at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, he was selected  by the Headquarters Commander to be a member of President John F. Kennedy’s Physical Fitness Team,” stated O’Brien.

“Our youth is the future of our country and among the most important purposes of our organization is to help students of all ages understand the true meaning of Memorial Day and why it is celebrated. We estimate that approximately 25% of the youth in our town are unable to answer basic questions about this important holiday. Many students are unaware of why this holiday is celebrated, or the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and equally important, the symbolic meaning of our American flag. With our essay contest, we hope to help instill that patriotism in our youth,” concluded O’Brien.
