CHARLES HELLER RESEARCH FUND ESTABLISHED AT BLINN

For 30 years, Charles Heller went the extra mile for his students, both as a chemistry professor and as a member of the Board of Trustees. On Thursday, Blinn College and the Blinn College Foundation will recognize that service with a kickoff reception for a research fund being established in his name.

The Charles Heller Research Fund will help students taking Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Geology 2289 pay for independent research projects. Past projects include a study regarding the impact of nutrition on performance and the development of a non-toxic, non-invasive method of DNA fingerprinting.

The Blinn College Foundation will host a kickoff reception for the research fund at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, in the Brenham campus Student Center Board Dining Room.

“We wanted to do something special to honor Charles Heller because he has gone above and beyond the faculty duties,” said Kelly Kissane, biology professor. “The reception will honor Charles for all everything he has done for his students and will allow us to begin raising funds and continue his legacy of service.”

Heller came to Blinn in 1972 to teach chemistry and later became the Natural Sciences Department head. After leaving to focus on his business, Brenham Trees, Heller served as a member of the Blinn Board of Trustees from 1984-92. Heller then returned to teaching chemistry and served on the Faculty Senate. He volunteered at University Interscholastic League competitions every year and retired in 2014.

The Foundation supports programs and activities that enhance the quality of education for Blinn College students and expand the educational opportunities for the entire community. While raising funds is an important function, the Foundation also seeks to heighten community awareness of the mission and accomplishments of the College and to promote excellence in education.

Since its inception in 2000, the Foundation has raised funds to purchase classroom equipment and supplies, and help launch major construction projects across Blinn’s campuses, including the A.W. Hodde, Jr. Technical Education Center, the J. Hal and Allyne Machat Music Facility, the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex and the Bert and Mae Dean Wheeler Residence Hall.  Story courtesy of Blinn College.
