CITY COUNCIL CLEARS THE WAY FOR JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION

The Brenham City Council cleared the way for the celebration of ‘Emancipation Day,’ at today’s (Thursday’s) meeting, by granting a noise ordinance variation.

Darron Smith of the Washington County Historical Juneteenth Association requested  the variation to hold a two day event on June 13th from 6pm to 11pm, and again on June 14th from noon to four pm at Fireman’s Park.

Amanda Klehm of the Brenham city staff said the variance was needed because they planned on having amplified music at the events.

Klehm also said the Association applied for a parade permit for downtown Brenham through the city’s parade route on  June 14th.   The City Council did not need to approve this because the police and fire departments approved the noise ordinance and parade requests.

Emancipation Day, or Juneteenth celebrates the events of June 19th, 1865, when word came to Texas of the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in the states that joined the Confederacy.
