CITY COUNCIL MEETING SET FOR THURSDAY

The Brenham City Council will look at 2 rezoning issues at their regular meeting Thursday.  The owner a small tract of land on Peabody Street wishes to have it rezoned mixed residential from its current commercial research and technology zoning.  That would make it match the zoning of his adjoining lot on Alamo Street.  The council will also have the second reading of an ordinance establishing a Neighborhood Business District south of the downtown area.  Parking inside the district had become an issue, and council decided at their June 15th meeting to waive the parking requirement for business who wish to locate in the district.

Also on the agenda, the council will look at establishing a Railroad Quiet Zone at the railroad crossing on FM 109.  Currently, the railroad crossings in the city are designated a quiet zone with no train horns sounding unless a person or vehicle are on the tracks.  The Quiet Zone for the FM 109 crossing is a joint project between the City, County, TxDOT and BNSF.

The council will also look at a request from the Washington County Appraisal District to utilize excess funds from this year’s budget for several projects.  Washington County Commissioners approved the request at their meeting Monday.

The council is also slated to award the final payment to Collier Construction for the new Pet Adoption Center.  They will also consider awarding a bid for construction of new restroom facilities for Fireman’s Park.  The new restrooms will be air conditioned and will have Mens, Womens, and Family facilities.

The City Council meets Thursday afternoon at 1:00 on the second floor of the City Hall building.

  1. Now I’m sure that the Brenham City council will fall in lock step with the Washington County Commissioners Court in approval of Mr. Dilworth’s request to let him keep the excess funds. Rest assured he will dutifully keep on raising our appraisal values by using aerial surveillance, buying the best computer system, and hiring more staff to keep those tax dollars rolling in so our elected politicians can keep on spending.
The only question is will it be a unanimous approval or will there be a dissenting vote or two?

  2. Another city street in appalling condition is North Dixie St. Short road , but heavily used for saving time and distance. Like riding a narrow roller coaster with pot holes. Been that way since annexation several years ago. City loves to annex for property tax revenue and obscene utility profit, but makes no significant investment unless for a upper socio economic group. If they cannot improve areas they annex within 5 years, then they should refund property taxes and abandon, and take loss on investments made. They have no motivation to make improvements, only collect revenues.

  3. Not only the railroad crossing on Salem but the entire road section that is actually a city street. Find another street in the City of Brenham with such narrow and bad conditions

  4. When will the deplorable rough railroad crossing on Salem Road be repaired? Sunday church attendees have been detouring to avoid vehicle wear and tear!

    1. If the city planner and city engineer was thinking about the city tax payers, areas in the county would not be annexed until the proposed areas are repaired to required standards.

      1. That crossing is in way better shape today than at any other point in the last 40 years. At least it can be crossed these days without going airborne.

    2. A matter that needs attention at the council meeting should be city code enforcement. I had a code enforcement employee come to my house yesterday, July 4th, and leave me a notice saying I had “junk” at my residence. This is a national holiday, not to mention city holiday, during which I was out with my family celebrating the independence of our great nation. As a veteran of this country I am appalled that the city administration condones this type of harassment on our Independence Day. Please have a discussion on working and harassing citizens and veterans during holidays.
