CITY COUNCIL TO HEAR ORDINANCES FOR PLACEMENT OF STOP SIGNS
The Brenham City Council will meet tomorrow to possibly pass an ordinance for placement of a stop sign on Becker Drive at South Market St., and for a stop sign on South Chappell Hill Street at U.S Highway 290.
The Council will also discuss and possibly approve on its First Reading a Rate Tariff Schedule for the City of Brenham Collection Station rates.
Dane Rau, of the City of Brenham cites the reasons for the increase is mostly in their commercial rates for brush. The rates currently being charged are not keeping up with expenses. Grinding cost have also risen.
The rate for commercial brush disposal will go from $15.00 to $22.00 a ton. This will include brush for some users as contractors.
There will be a charge of $17.50 a ton for any brush presented that is less than a ton.
Also cited as a reason for the increase in that the grinder trucks are twelve years old, and Rau says they will need to be replaced in the next two years, also citing the cost of labor is far surpassing the fees brought in to do the service.
Dane also cited a change in the fee charged for tire disposal. For regular passenger cars, the cost will go up from $2.00 to $3.00, for vehicles with 16” tires, they charge will go up from $5.00 to $7.50, and for large commercial vehicles of 49” or larger, the price will increase from $35.00 to $45.00.
Also up for review on its Second Reading is the possibility of amending Chapter 12, Health and Sanitation Article III concerning Junked Vehicles in the City of Brenham.
During the scheduled work session, the Council will see a presentation and will have a discussion concerning parklets in the downtown area.
Parklets are public seating platforms that convert curbside parking spaces so that the grade of the sidewalk gets carried out into the parking lane. The authority to extend into the right of way is granted by the owner of the right-of-way, and for the purposes of the parklet program in downtown Brenham, the owner of the right-of-way is the City of Brenham.
One of the “pros” of the project is the addition of a public green space, and increase in foot traffic to the businesses adjacent to the parket, and one of the “cons” is loss of up to three parking spaces.
The Brenham City Council will meet on Thursday, at 1:00pm, on the second floor of City Hall in Council Chambers on 200 W. Vulcan.

Again, someone is changing the way downtown looks-it is no longer the cute little town that we grew up in! Parklets?? Really?? As if parking downtown is not bad enough, now they want to take away more parking spaces? Some of us do have to conduct business downtown on our lunch hour and we spend most of that time driving around looking for a parking space or parking a distance and walking. Part of the reason we don’t come downtown to eat at lunch is that there is no parking! But I digress……someone who never grew up here decides how my hometown should look!
im not for the parklets idea because it does away with the parking in downtown which there is to few of any way I hope the citizens can vote on this topic my vote would be a no due to taking away needed parking from down town
Is council removing the stop lights at the Becker drive / South Market location? Are they going to place adequate warnings of this change before the intersection approach , or handle it the way the new and unnecessary stop sign at the S. Day St / and Charles Lewis was installed? That change garners lots of revenue in citations and endangers the welfare of the public.
I hope the city does not due away with the stop light at becker drive and s. market it seems to be doing just fine
