CITY COUNCIL VOTES ON TAX PHASE-IN

By a vote of 4-to-2 the Brenham City Council approved the first reading of a tax phase-in agreement for Independence Coffee Company.

The company is planning to relocate to downtown Brenham in the former Beaumier Iron Works building at 321 South Baylor St.  Officials with the company say they expect to create five new jobs during the first year of operation and would invest more than $100,000 in capital in the first year on new equipment.

The big question for two of the council members: Gloria Nix and Danny Goss, is the safety and integrity of the Beaumier building and the liability of the city if the phase-in plan were granted.

City Attorney Carey Bovey repeatedly stated that granting the tax agreement would not make the city responsible or liable for the building.   He also told the council that inspections would have to be made before any business were to occupy the building.

City Development Services Director Julie Fulgham also told the board that the building would have to pass inspection before any business was allowed to occupy it.  She also reiterated that the city would have no liability for the facilities.

The city passed the first reading, with Nix and Goss voting against it.

The project has the backing of the Brenham Economic Development Foundation.
