CITY OF BRENHAM BEGINS EARLY BUDGET WORK

The City of Brenham has begun work on the 2016-17 budget.

The city council met in a workshop session this (Monday) morning to begin laying the groundwork for work on next year’s spending plan.

Among the items discuss at this (Monday) morning’s workshop, were a number of major capital projects and a fire department substation and staffing.

City Manager Terry Roberts told the council the new animal shelter and renovations and expansion of the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library came in higher than anticipated, with a total shortfall of $1.2 million.  Both will be completed by the end of this year.

Proceeds from the sale of city property that had intended for a landfill were used to fund those shortfalls.

The council also heard an update on a fire department substation in south Brenham and the department’s staffing shortfall.

Roberts says the top priority would be to add three more paid firefighters next year, at a budget impact of almost $200,000.

Other recommendations are to construct the substation at a projected cost of $2.2 million.

While no debt was issued for the city’s 2015-16 fiscal year, there has been some discussion about a potential issuance for street and utility projects.
