CITY OF BRENHAM LOOKS FOR NEW LANDFILL

Beginning in November of this year, the City of Brenham will have to haul its trash to a different landfill.  The city is currently hauling its solid waste to Sunset Farms Landfill in Austin, but it will be closing in November.   The City of Brenham staff has visited with the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency who owns the landfill in Carlos, TX along with the City of Bryan and City of College Station. Although that landfill is very close, they charge $26.69 per ton compared to the current rate in Austin of $17.00 per ton. Brenham transfers 21,000 tons to landfills from the Transfer Station each year.

The city staff is currently looking into hauling the solid waste to a landfill in Altair, just south of Columbus that is operated by Clean Harbors Environmental Services.  While slightly farther away than the Carlos landfill, the negotiated rate per ton is considerably cheaper at $16.86.  It is also closer than the current Austin landfill.

The Brenham City Council is scheduled to discuss and possibly vote on this issue at their meeting Thursday at 1pm at the City Hall.

  1. I’ve got an idea, let’s put it in Chappell Hill. I know there’s about 450 acres of land for sale that would be perfect.

  2. We had a landfill site but sold it. Now we truck our garbage at a premium price.

    1. Yup, even had the permit. Opportunities abound, just not in ‘our’ Washington county backyard.
