Gloria Nix (at large Position 6) and Mary Barnes-Tilley (at large Position 5) sat in on their last city council meeting Friday morning, after both councilwomen decided not to seek reelection this year.

A special reception was held after the meeting where Nix and Barnes-Tilley were presented with commemorative plaques.

Nix served on the city council for 20 years, acting as mayor pro tem for several of her terms. During her years of service, Nix served with 14 different council members and two mayors.

Barnes-Tilley was elected to her position in 2012.

In a statement announcing that she would not seek re-election, Barnes-Tilley said she has enjoyed her time on the council:

"While we shared differing opinions and viewpoints at times, it was always a healthy discussion and debate, and ultimately we made decisions for the good of the citizens of Brenham” said Barnes-Tilley. “It is my hope that new members of the council also embrace the servant leadership philosophy and make decisions best for Brenham."

Former council member Charlie Pyle (Position 5) and Susan Cantey (Position 6) were the only candidates to file for the positions.

Pyle and Cantey will be sworn in the city council’s May 18th meeting.
