CITY TO BEGIN ANNUAL WATER SYSTEM MAINTENACE

The City of Brenham’s Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily changing the disinfection process for the month of August, 2016. This program, commonly referred to as a chlorine “burnout,” has immediate as well as ongoing treatment benefits in maintaining water quality.

The treatment consists of changing the feed of chloramines (a combination of chlorine and ammonia) to injecting free chlorine (chlorine only). During this process, customers may experience fluctuations in water pressure and/or possible odor, unusual taste or color issues with the water.

Matthew Monfreda, Water Treatment Plant Manager, says that there are no health risks and the water is be safe to drink. During this process, water mains will be heavily flushed to remove these issues as quickly as possible. Monfreda goes on to say that “… systems that use chloramines must perform a system burnout from time to time and the TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) considers this a normal system maintenance procedure.”

If you have any questions regarding this treatment process, please contact the City of Brenham’s Water Treatment Plant Manager at 979.530.6170.
