CITY TO GET BUDGET AND TAX RATE AT NEXT MEETING

Work on the 2016-17 Brenham City budget is nearing completion.

The City Council is set to get the budget and tax rate at their next meeting, set for next Thursday (8/4) at City Hall.

According to City Manager Terry Roberts, last week’s workshops went well, resulting in a $60.4-million budget—which is down $2.3-million from the current spending plan…

The projected tax rate for the coming year is just over 50-cents per hundred dollars valuation, which is a 3.5-cent increase over 2015-16.

However, Roberts says that rate is still 6-cents lower than the 2014-15 tax rate…

The City Council is expected to approve the first public hearing on the budget and tax rate for Thursday, August 18th and the second for Thursday, September 1st.

The budget and tax rate are expected to be formally adopted later in September.

  1. Any raise in the tax rate for city residents is ludricrous in a time of stale wages, rising food and medical and more residents on a fixed income than ever. Your sales tax revenue is down, so trim your expenses, period. When citizens face an income reduction, we trim our expenditures, why not this small town? Maybe it is because it is a small town with far too large a payroll? Enough! Voters must demand a fiscally conservative council and city manager.
