COLLEGE STATION MAN IDENTIFIED IN BORDER PATROL SHOOTING

A man who was shot and killed after fleeing a Border Patrol checkpoint on Saturday was from College Station.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 25-year-old Gerardo Coronado Jr., of College Station, has been identified as the driver in the incident.

Authorities say a pickup with two men was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. 385 just after noon on Saturday. When they were instructed to go to a secondary inspection area, the men fled.

Members of the U.S. Border Patrol and Brewster County Sheriff’s Office pursued the vehicle, requesting assistance from Pecos County Sheriff’s Office and DPS.

Approximately six miles south of Fort Stockton, spikes were deployed and the truck’s tires were deflated. A deputy with the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office then fired at the pickup truck in the attempt to disable it.

A preliminary investigation says the truck came to a stop and Coronado exited the vehicle with a weapon.

Deputies from both the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office and Pecos County Sheriff’s Office discharged their firearms, shooting Coronado.

Coronado was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, 26-year-old Sergio Daniel Montalvo, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. Authorities found more than 200 pounds of marijuana in the truck after the stop.

The Texas Rangers are currently investigating the shooting.
