COMMISSIONERS HEAR PRESENTATIONS IN WORKSHOP SESSION

Librarian Andria Heiges

Washington County Commissioners heard two presentations during a workshop session Tuesday morning.  Andria Heiges, Librarian at the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library, reviewed the many services that are available at the library.  She noted that visits and checkouts were trending downward from 2012 to 2016, when the new expanded library opened, but now they are way up. Heiges talked the many computer services that are available through the library including e-book checkout.  She invited everyone to come to the library nest Tuesday for the library birthday party from 2:30 to 5:30 PM.

Sharon Brass

In the second presentation, Sharon Brass for the Hotel Occupancy Tax Board, reviewed the drop in tourism in the County in the last two years.  She said the county has lost over 20 million dollars in tourism spending while other counties of similar size have continued to see increased tourism.

Several people involved in tourism in the county were at the meeting and also spoke.  Jenny Van Dorf form Blue Bell Creameries said that they have recorded over 100,000 visitors since their new observation deck opened in May of last year.   County Commissioner Kirk Hanath said that they need an ongoing dialog about tourism, that this can’t be just a single report.  He added that tourism promotion needs to be diversified, that we can’t just count on Blue Bell attracting visitors.  Chamber of Commerce President Page Michel said that she was optimistic, that the downturn has forced everyone to diversify, with music, art, sports, and historical sites being promoted more.
